Self-Care – What Does It Really Mean?

Self-Care – What Does It Really Mean?

We hear the term self-care all the time, but what does it actually mean? And more importantly, how do you fit it into an already hectic life?

The truth is, self-care isn't a luxury—it's something we all need. If you feel like there's simply no time in your day, it might be time to rethink your schedule.

For many of us, the day starts long before work begins. There are packed lunches to make, school runs, meal prep, dog walks, emails and endless life admin. Then comes the working day, followed by more responsibilities when you get home. Before you know it, you're collapsing in front of the TV, exhausted, only to do it all again tomorrow.

Sound familiar?

Start Small

If you're struggling to find time for yourself, start with just 30 minutes a day.

That half hour could be:

  • A walk in the fresh air
  • A proper lunch or coffee break
  • Reading a book
  • Sitting quietly with a cup of tea
  • Simply lying down and switching off

It doesn't have to be complicated. Giving yourself permission to pause can leave you feeling calmer, more focused and surprisingly more productive.

If you're new to mindfulness, apps such as Headspace can be a great way to take a few minutes for guided meditation or breathing exercises.

Find Movement You Actually Enjoy

Exercise doesn't have to mean hours in the gym. The best type of exercise is the one you'll actually stick to.

For me, that's walking, swimming and, surprisingly, the gym! I never imagined I'd say that, but it's become one of my favourite parts of the week.

If your schedule allows, try joining a regular class. Paying in advance can be great motivation to turn up! I recently tried Pilates and found it far more challenging than I expected. But because I had to concentrate so hard, my mind completely switched off from everything else for an hour. That alone made it worthwhile.

Whatever you choose, make it part of your routine. Eventually it becomes a habit—a non-negotiable part of your week that everything else fits around.

Put It in the Diary

One of the biggest excuses we all make is, "I don't have time."

Trust me, I've been the queen of that excuse!

But if something matters, we usually find a way. Schedule your exercise or self-care just as you would any other important appointment. Sometimes that might mean getting up a little earlier or saying no to something else, but your future self will thank you.

Don't Forget to Relax

As you can imagine, I'm a little biased here, but regular holistic therapy can be a wonderful addition to your self-care routine.

Reflexology is one of my favourites because it combines deep relaxation with supporting the body's natural balance. During a treatment, many clients experience a profound sense of calm while the therapy works to encourage relaxation, help calm the nervous system and support overall wellbeing.

If possible, book appointments in advance. Weekly treatments are wonderful if your budget and schedule allow, but monthly or every six weeks can also be incredibly beneficial.

Other therapies worth considering include:

  • Massage
  • Reiki
  • Acupuncture

Each offers its own benefits for relaxation, stress management and overall wellbeing.

Think of It as an Investment

It's easy to question the cost of looking after yourself.

But investing in your health now can pay dividends in the future. Sometimes that might mean buying fewer new clothes or cutting back on meals out, but your physical and mental wellbeing is one of the best investments you can make.

Too often, we wait until we're burnt out before taking action.

Regular reflexology can become part of a preventative approach to wellbeing—helping you maintain balance rather than waiting until you've completely run out of energy.

Prevention Matters

We're often very good at treating symptoms but not always so good at asking why they appeared in the first place.

Stress, poor diet, lack of movement and inadequate rest can all have a significant impact on how we feel.

While medical advice is essential for many conditions, making positive lifestyle changes can often improve your overall health and wellbeing. Small changes really do add up over time.

Take a look at:

  • Your sugar intake
  • Processed foods
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Daily movement
  • Stress levels

You don't need to be perfect. Even small improvements can make a noticeable difference.

Sleep Is Essential

Sleep is another huge part of self-care—and I wish I had all the answers!

I've struggled with sleepless nights myself over the years, but I've found that stress levels, diet, alcohol and regular exercise all play an important role in improving sleep quality.

Don't Undo Your Hard Work at the Weekend

Try to keep your healthy habits going throughout the weekend too.

Go for a walk, spend time outdoors, eat nourishing food, rest when you need to and still enjoy the occasional treat. Self-care isn't about perfection—it's about consistency.

A Gentle Reminder

None of this is revolutionary advice.

Sometimes we simply need reminding that we deserve the same care and attention that we so often give to everyone else.

It's taken me a long time to truly prioritise myself, but now I do, and I genuinely enjoy living in a way that supports both my physical and mental wellbeing.

If you've been thinking about making yourself more of a priority, perhaps today is the day to take that first step.

If you'd like to experience the benefits of reflexology for yourself, I'd love to welcome you to one of my clinics. You'll find me each week at The Practice Rooms in Exeter and The Calm Studio in Rockbeare. You can book your appointment via the booking link on my website.

After all, self-care isn't selfish—it's one of the best investments you can make in your future health.
