What I learnt on my recent Reflexology Retreat

So many things! Where do I start?

I recently spent a beautiful week in a tiny village nestled in the Andalucian hills. The setting was stunning – peaceful, picturesque, and blessed with perfect weather. It was the ideal environment to slow down, breathe, and simply be.

There were 16 Reflexologists from all across the UK. Some knew each other from previous retreats, while many of us were meeting for the very first time. Yet it didn't take long for a sense of connection to form.

The retreat was run by a small team of truly beautiful souls who gently held and supported us throughout the week. Some of us arrived not even realising how much we needed that support, or why.

There was a quiet understanding amongst us. It was rarely spoken aloud, but it was there all the same. We are all working women, therapists, healers, wives, mothers, carers. We all arrived carrying baggage of one kind or another. Some shared their stories openly, while others carried them more quietly, but there was a deep sense of recognition and understanding between us.

We were all sailing a similar boat – and sailing it well – but at what cost?

The week was filled with laughter, support, tears, learning, and a beautiful camaraderie. It struck the perfect balance between professional development, personal healing, and much-needed rest.

Most importantly, there were no expectations placed upon us. We simply had permission to be.

When was the last time you allowed yourself that?

No rushing to work. No striving to be the perfect therapist. No school runs, family schedules, meal planning, dog walking, problem-solving, or endlessly thinking about tomorrow's to-do list.

Just being.

For perhaps the first time in a very long time, we were encouraged to tune into ourselves. To ask:
Why does that ache?
What is my body trying to tell me?
How do I really feel?
Am I actually okay?

For once, we weren't Mum, wife, business owner, therapist, or carer.
We were simply ourselves.

Throughout the week, we were nurtured by wonderful practitioners offering healing massage, reiki, holistic facials, and other therapies. It was our turn to receive. We rested by the pool in the middle of the day (imagine that!), enjoyed nourishing homemade food, slept when we needed to, walked, explored, swapped treatments, and listened to each other's stories and experiences. There may have been the odd glass of wine as well!

One of the biggest things I realised was just how exhausted my nervous system had become.

Deep down, I already knew it.

But having the space to really acknowledge it, to sit with it, and to consider the impact it could have on my future health and wellbeing was incredibly powerful.

I returned home feeling calm, grounded, and rejuvenated. For once, I'm not paddling furiously beneath the surface while appearing calm on top. A week later, that sense of serenity is still with me, and I am determined not to slip back into the permanently busy, slightly manic version of myself that had become my normal.

The biggest lesson I've brought home is this:
Taking time for yourself is not a luxury. It's a necessity.

Check in with yourself regularly. Ask yourself how you are. Treat yourself with the same compassion, kindness, and care that you so readily offer everyone else.

And as for me? I've decided that a retreat is now an annual non-negotiable. A chance to soothe my soul, refill my cup, and reconnect with myself.
Most importantly, I've given myself permission to do that.

I went away with Equilibrio Retreats - http://www.equilibrioretreats.com/ - Creating balance between giving and receiving. The good news is you don't have to be a Reflexologist, they run retreats for all!
